This is money a worker has payed in tax, why shouldn't they get the tax back?
What do you think we all pay tax for? It's to pay for the country we live in, for each of us to have a better life, it's not the governments money, it's ours, we ALL put it in the coffers. If you don't want your taxes going back out into our hands, where do you propose it goes? They sure as hell aren't putting back into services like education or hospitals, so where is it going? Back into tax breaks for the wealthier which means they're taking it from the poorer people and giving it to the wealthy. Do you think that's fair?
So I ask you, why should the poor pay for the wealthy's merc?
Umm... They don't ? The "wealthy " pay for their merc with the money they earn.

Why should my hard working, lower pay husband be paying for wealthy people's PHI?? We live in a community. My 50k husband helps pay for people's private school govt funding, the first home buyers we will never get bc a bank won't touch us. That's fine by me... but then I'm unashamedly socialist

No they don't, they claim it at tax time

Now I'm getting confused actually. Is this school kid bonus a tax rebate, so you only get it if you pay tax, or is it a straight out handout?

It was at tax time, until July last year. Now it's an automatic payment in Jan and July.

So in the end they actually don't end up with a huge amount in their pocket.
Those who earn a high income don't actually get taxed 50% on their entire income. Just on a portion of it.

We earn well above what the threshold is for any middle class welfare besides the CCR and I'm grateful that we are in a position to not require assistance.

I am extremely aware that things like the School Kids Bonus and FTB are so very needed by many parents and think that taking it away is typical of the Liberal Governments views on families in need.

It really irks me that so many who earn high incomes are so begrudging of those who require some assistance. I mean its a few hundred dollars a year that is put to good use in educating our future generation!!

I'm one of those middle incomers that whinged about the phi rebate cuts. But I also agree with what you say here: we should help out most vulnerable.

I have no idea why Abbot thinks this is a smart move. Lower income people are bound to spend more (probably the whole amount) of the $400. Thus stimulating the economy more. The richer you are, the more you save.

    This is exactly us...

What irks me is the attitude that if you're wealthy then you automatically work "so much harder" than a lower income worker. As a generalisation I think it might be the other way around... But with this said, I do get there would be hard workers and not so hard workers across all income levels!

We just did the pay reviews for our staff last week and even though your figures were out a bit ($50,000 pays roughly 17% tax and $150,000 pays 33% tax) you were right in the end result - our sales guy earns $100k more than our secretary but he only pays 16% more tax

I think its a good idea. The country needs to save money to survive long term, seems the government throws money at everyone for everything. Imagine what they could do if they took out baby bonus, schoolkid bonus, child care help 2 days a week for non working parents, etc then they can take that money and find other things to spend it on like helping more with child care and before and after school care for parents that depend on it to work.
