Clementine Grace, I have just been thinking about your situation - if the private health fees are causing financial strain could you ask to be referred to the public system to see a kidney specialist?

It was a question relating directly to a pp With the sole purpose of seeking more clarification from another poster about their opinion.
    I saw it.

Hi Benji, thanks for that yup i def could and we did think about it but where I am the public system is really crap. The dr I'm seeing is a well known specialist who's been at it for years and I really trust him. He thinks I could have a rare underlying kidney problem so have to see him after the baby. He's impossible to get into but has been so great fitting me in while I'm preggers and has said I'm a priority patient. So it is costing us heaps but were just doing without other things. Took us years to make this bub so didn't want to take any chances. It just gets hard when you loose an income.

After 1hr and 15 mins on hold with centrelink, looks like I prob am eligible for PPL! There is a clause that makes you except from the work test if you had to give up with due to pregnancy complications, yay!

I was in the same predicament. Just cleaned out my account to pay a specialist, and am likely to have to fork out more. I don't mind so long as it keeps me out of the public system.

Have you got any PHI? I can claim some pharmacy medication on this, and I think with what I've been able to claim through them + medicare I'm pretty fortunate.

Yup I have full PHI, some you can claim back. I hit the safety net again in early jan when I paid my 3k ob fee so that's really made a difference, some fees are capped though. We sunk over 20k last year into IVF so we've gotten used to big dr bills, but thought I might be lucky to have a normal pregnancy. Ah well.

Specialists are just so expensive I honestly don't know how people afford it. Our ob is $170 per visit a fortnight and specialist is $300. Even when you get some back you still need the upfront money.

After you do your initial appointment some specialists will agree to bulk bill you if you ask? Might be worth a shot.

Just bad luck really.
If you are 'on leave' from your position, you are still classified as employed. You may still be eligible with a dr cert.
