We could have afforded it without the bonus, but it would really have hurt us. The money is going back into the economy and into business, so it's win win.

But as usual the libs plan to spend the savings, not bank it, on giving the rich yet more tax cuts.

I spent just under 2k on uniforms, shoes and books this year and that with buying some secondhand uniforms.

I have one starting prep, one starting high school and 2 others in primary.

DS's school uniform and supplies were bought on the credit card as we don't have the money or savings to buy outright. This is thanks to having a LNP Premier who has put 15,000 out of work of which the knock-on effect means that my hours have decreased to virtually nothing. Right now I'm grateful for every penny.

Default Re: Abbott to axe school bonus if he gets in

I guess that's not a surprising move by a liberal government.
It's only going to disadvantage to those who need help the most.

Doesn't the bonus just replace the ability to claim it all back at tax time?

I suppose this helps those are on such a low income they don't have to do a tax return though... but perhaps that should be considered instead. The bonus for those on a very low income, and just back to regular tax returns for everyone else.

In all honesty, while I was glad I had $205 in my account recently that I otherwise wouldn't have, this one is a big deal for me. It wouldn't make NOT vote for Abbott (if for some reason I'd gone insane and decided to give it to him in the first place... lol).

Yes it same thing as the old tax cut but now it (well 1/2 of it) is given when it is really needed rather in the middle of the year.

Default Abbott to axe school bonus if he gets in

At the risk of being vilified and left to burn at the stake, I actually think this is a good idea to abolish this payment.

It's not like you wake up one day and go "Oh, X starts school today I have to spend hundreds on school uniforms!"

There's at least four years between your child being born and them starting prep. Plan for it.

Life can throw you curve balls. Your husband finds himself retrenched. Your car blows up and it will cost 2k to fix. It's not logical to buy uniforms 4 years in advance. At our school it has changed several times in the last 5 years.

Some families for a multitude of reasons are really battling. This isn't to get your hair done, it's for school stuff. it's a need not a want.

I am not surprised. I guess he is being up front about it

I am not eligible for it, but it would have been nice this year. I was made redundant last November and my ex doesn't pay anything. However, they seem to have everything they need.

You can no longer claim at tax time. The school kids bonus replaced claiming at tax time
