If you were still employed but just on unpaid leave you should have - or do you mean when your maternity leave ended you quit your job so didn't get it?

Thanks ladies. I didn't necessarily mean on here. Just in general from friends, family, colleagues (mine not his). But I whole heatedly support benefits for low income families!

I don't think even the richest bub hub member is wanting to cut all assistance to low income earners?

baby bonus is actually only for the first child now if im not mistaken, its also means tested?
Does that mean the school bonus is also for the first child?
FTB isnt cut when your child starts school does it?
Dont we get enough payments to help raise our kids already?

I just wanted to point this out. This isn't an uncommon attitude unfortunately. The $400 school bonus would come out of the tax pool, which would have been paid by all kinds of people including childless, wealthy, poor, struggling.

I personally believe that in the past I have been given too much assistance. My DP and I are very simple people and we earn more than enough to keep ourselves alive, save and even splurge from time to time.

I don't think that assistance is 'enough' for many families - especially those who have to choose between home ownership or family, or work or children. Or who give up one income and are just scraping by.

The average full payment for 1 child on the pension is less than $900 p/f. With rent assistance, tfb. If your child is 8 and you are studying or looking for work it's about $750.

Could you survive on that, paying rent, food, utilities? without the bonus also hundreds in school uniforms.

There's no way I'd swap our 50k a year, which is considered low income, for me to be on the SPP and this is where higher income earners are saying why not save? but what do you do when there's physically nothing to save for uniforms?

Building state primary and secondary schools in areas where there are none as in the case in Melbourne or in areas where the schools are packed to capacity which can't be good for the children either.

If they remove the bonus then it needs to be claimable on tax, I don't believe in removing the assistance altogether as clearly the cost of schooling, even state schooling, is spiralling.

No, baby bonus is for additional children too, the rate just drops to $3000 for subsequent children as of July 1st this year.

My husband has just gotten a promotion which means we are no longer eligible for any centrelink, and I am incredibly grateful that we don't need to receive it anymore, and I definitely do not begrudge payments to people who do qualify for them.
