In addition to eveything that has already been said, have you thought about doing voluntary work or work experience, particularly in your field of interest. Not only will it increase your skills, but can possibly lead to employment. It looks great on your resume as well.

Update: I took some suggestions on board and have given it a go..

I found that all positions at the hospital are governed by Qld Health, not locally, and at present there are no vacancies.

I tried a few more businesses around town and while all were polite, the floods have slammed them and they aren't employing. Fair enough.

Have put out feelers further afield in other nearby towns and, so far, the same story re floods but I'll still keep tabs on the situation.

Re volunteering, I did contact two organisations. Both had an interview process that was long and arduous and to be very honest, I just don't have the time to devote to the coming and going they were asking for. However, there is a Landcare group that I will be joining so that's a positive outcome.

As an experiment, I put up a notice at the hospital asking for expressions of interest regarding a mobile beauty service. So far, this has attracted five responses which caught me by surprise so at present I am looking into the viability of such a service (eg. insurances, equipment etc) so will keep you posted on that one.

I have also found that the area I'm in caters for a fair number of markets and ones that encourage newcomers unlike the hoity toity ones I found in the city. So I'm thinking of giving these a go by setting up a stall and either selling baked goods or beaded adornments/embellishments which I did a bit of during my pregnancy.

    Thanks again for the feedback
