I never vote either. I think it's good that if you don't like either party, look at the independants, you aren't voting a person as prime minister but giving them a seat in parliament, it means they can't pass whatever they want. I liked when neither was in charge and the independants had the final vote. (sorry not good on political talk)

Default And we have an election date ... 14 September

The thought of Abbot as PM makes me shudder. If he gets in, might be time for DP to look at some OS contracts...

It's pretty crappy that it is Yom Kippur. It shows a real lack of awareness on the governments behalf. There are plenty of Saturdays which wouldn't have held particular significance to anyone that they could have chosen.

I appreciate that people can vote early, but what she is really saying to a minority group is 'I didn't know or didn't care about you guys'

First of all I'm athiest but not anti-Semitic. Whatever religion someone wants to follow I respect that.

That being said Australia is not a religious nation. Religion should not stop our nation from running. Sure we've got a couple of public holidays dressed up as a religion celebration. Thats more of a testament to the fact Australia had a lot of practising christians in the olden days...and more so that Australians now like a day off. Its not a national day of religious happenings anymore.

Anyhoo back to my point. Our nation shouldn't stop running or change for any religion let alone a minority one. And Judaism is a minority religion (not saying it to be hurtful, just stating the truth). The government can't go pandering changing dates for every Tom Di@k or Harry otherwise they will never find a suitable election date and we'll be stuck with Julia forever.

I agree we are a secular nation, but I would have liked her to answer the question about Yom Kippur respectfully rather than compare it to the AFL finals.

    It was a bit glib.

Will be looking at OS jobs if TA gets in.

Also don't think Yom Kippur is a great date.

    I have to agree here.
Elections are always on a Saturday. I do not for one minute believe this date was selected to upset Jewish Australians and I don't think it's fair to say it was done thoughtlessly. We are a secular country- despite the two Christian holidays. VicPark explained those really well. But as a secular nation I don't think we can take into account every religion when determining dates for things like this. Hinduism, for example, has more than 30 holy days.
