Daa-taa instead of dayta (data) really bugs me! (I'm from the UK so it's what I grew up with)

I am with you Girl X. When I lived in the uk The first time i said "marone" the whole office stopped and looked at me. They thought it was the funniest thing they had ever heard. Then they said you don't say "Ballone"(for balloon) why say "marone" for maroon. I think the band is pronounced Maroon Five too.
I think a lot of mispronounciations can be confused with dialects as well The english language is forever changing.

    I say 'marone'

    What about 'memo'?
Some say 'mee-mo' and some say 'mem-o'

Now that I've drawn enough attention to myself about Chester draws, I'm going back into my hole now :-)

As for maroon, both the Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries say the pronunciation is ma-roon.

Well, them and every other English speaking country except for Uhstraya ;-)

    My Mother.

She says 'Sautée' instead of 'Satay' sauce (as in the peanut sauce) and it drives me effing BONKERS!

Despite me continually saying and repeating it back to her as 'Sa-Tay' she still, then, says 'Saw-Tay'.
