Default Re: ATTN: all cake makers :)

I don't like the taste of fondant (and I have a huge sweet tooth) but I've still had lots of fondant covered cakes made for me, I just get it peeled off before it's served. You don't have to eat it.

It basically tastes like sugar that has been made into a paste, which is pretty much what it is...

Fondant covered cakes don't have to be heavy, you just need to practice lots. My wedding cake was amazing, and it was light and fluffy with from memory 4 layers of frosting in each teir of cake.

Fondant isn't one type of icing. It's several, depending on the consistency and how you apply it. For example, you can use it also as a filling or as a dip. It's bound to be super sweet as it's just sugar and water...sometimes with a bit of lemon juice, gelatin or marshmallow thrown in, again depending on how you are applying it to the cake. But even though it dries quickly, it is easily recoverable.

The MAT is a must for beginners. Makes picking up fondant and placing it on the cake a breeze! Good luck I'm hungry now!!

Yes a mat too - but I'm a cheapskate so got a 2-pack of these super thin 'chopping mats' from a $2 shop which, while a bit small for a large cake, are great for a non-pro like me!
