Each and every hospital is different. Firstly you would need the cost for your OB to perform the c/s, cost of the theatre in private plus the hospital stay and anaethetic. My SIL is going private without health cover atm and I'm pretty sure she said it is going to cost $10k. The hospital stay being the most expensive.

On another note I also have a double uterus and was told I could never birth naturally yet I had DD1 natural(induced though) and my other 3DD's c/s for different reasons.

I didn't have a c-section, but like BabyG4 said, it's often the hospital stay that is most expensive. I was in hospital for five nights before and after the birth of my DS and my health fund paid out almost $11,000. My DH is a theatre nurse and from his experience c-section patients have the cost of their Ob (which you would have no matter what type of delivery), the anaesthetist, and sometimes the Ob's assistant. I'm sorry, I have no idea how much that would be.PS - congratulations on your pregnancy! See you in the September DIG!

Also try and find out if they will cover bubba if they need to go to the special care nursery.. It can cost up to $2000 per day if they need to be admitted and aren't covered.

I got a letter from my health fund saying they paid out nearly 20k for my c-section plus private hospital stay. That was on top of the 5k (before medicare/tax) that I was out of pocket.

I'm pretty sure they tend to charge private health companies top dollar and give a bit of discount to privatly funded paitents, but they only way to get an indea to to speak to your ob, hospital, anethatist etc.

Have you been with your health cover for a long time? Maybe give them a call and see if they can cover any of it. I'm with HCF and have been for years and years and they waived a few waiting periods for me with our IVF and another op I had to have. Give them a call, doesn't hurt to ask. Not sure if it will work though.... just my 2 cents

Is there a reason you can't go public with a private OB. We did this with my last bub so we had all prenatal care with my OB, c section etc and the only thing we paid for we're the prenatal visits so about $500 out of pocket

Not wanting to scare but my PHI paid out getting close to $100,000 for my DDs birth. I had a totally normal pregnancy, but ended up with an emergency c/s and had a major bleed resulting in ICU and a couple of weeks in hospital. Of course this is totally abnormal but these things can happen without warning and I'd have no idea what we would have done if we'd been faced with those bills. Perhaps just have a plan in place to transfer to public should any complications arise if that's possible??

For my ob to do the c section was about 4k, plus the assistant (havent got his bill yet). Anesthetist was over 1k, hospital stay (incl theatre) was over 5k. Plus the usual ob appointment costs, and the management fee. Totes worth it though!
