Default Do you have separate bank accounts as your spouse?

DH and I have always had a joint account. I pay all of the bills etc via Internet banking. Even before we married, it was always 'our' money.

We knew a couple who were married, together for 7 years, and ha everything separate. To the point where if one did not have enough money for the week they would have to borrow it off of the other and pay it back later. That is very odd I think.

We have joint accounts, I get zero income from anywhere so if we has seperate accounts mine would constantly have a $0 balance.

My husband is the sole breadwinner but has nothing to do with the money, I pay all out bills, spending money ect. He usually comes to me and asks if there is enough money in our account for so and so.

Once we get ontop o things again DH will have a seperate account for his spending money so that he can buy gifts ect without me knowing

Been together 7yrs and have separate accounts. Probably always will. Its not that we consider it 'my money and his money' or anything....we just have separate accounts. We are with the same bank so if we need to transfer money from one account to another for any reason (to cover a direct debit thats going to come out etc.) then it transfers instantly anyway.

Separate accounts, but we share our money and have a budget chat every couple of months.

I'm good at saving and df isn't, while he can also be a bit nit picky on my spending. So I'd rather spend and save how I want without any discussion. We both get allocated funds to spend how we see fit. It's all fair and transparent. But I do think we'd bicker heaps with shared account.

We have a joint account and our separate accounts.
I think you need to have enough in just your own name to pay day to day expenses if your partner dies and your joint account then gets frozen. Saves having to race to withdraw a pile of cash before the bank is notified. Current bills and stuff you'd just sob at the company tell them to wait until after probate, but that method won't provide for new or ongoing expenses like food for you or your children.

DP and I have had a joint account since we purchased our first house. But I know married couples with separate accounts and others with secret accounts. Separate I have no issue with but secret worries me.

Secret worries me too, it obviously says you are thinking of leaving or don't trust your partner. If you don't trust them, what on earth are you doing with them or having ANY joint accounts.

I have a friend like this whose partner scrutinises their cc statement and she has to justify every purchase...even though her salary is in the $120k range! She has a 'secret' account. To me that is very different and a lot more worrying than a married couple who are too lazy to go to the bank and sign up for joint accounts

DH and I have a joint account and then linked to that is another account that's is in my name that we use solely for direct debits because I had that account first many many years ago. DH doesn't manage the bills, I do and is totally shocking with money so it's better this way. We have had a joint account for almost 9 years. I can't imagine having seperate accounts or no access to all our family money. It's weird to me but I get why some people don't so joint accounts.
