Default Upsetting: Illigal immigrant planning attack

He was sentenced to jail for planning terrorist attacks, however the fact that he was receiving Centrelink payments and wasn't born in Australia has nothing to do with anything. All it does is create scaremongering in the community towards a vulnerable group of people, based on the actions of a few men. There is already enough prejudice, racism and ignorance surrounding asylum seekers. Terms such as "illegal immigrant" should never be used in reference to this sort of situation, it's inflammatory and creates a bigger divide between people.

The fact that he is a Muslim cleric was highlighted several times in the piece - again, not necessary or relative. There are terrorists in every religion. The derogatory attitudes towards asylum seekers and Muslims in Australia needs to stop.

I didn't see the original article/story but I assume it was along the lines of the email forwards/FB statuses that say "illegal immigrants are coming to Aus and stealing all your taxpayer dollars!!!!". A friend's mum who is one of the loveliest people I know used to forward them to me and I was so saddened that she either had those views or was taken in by them.

My entire team at work used to have discussions about the same topic where they were all convinced of the same thing and also that Muslims were coming to Australia and trying to force Sharia Law on us all. I don't understand how intelligent people can think these things because they read some second-rate article or hear something on the news about boat people without doing further research themselves.

It seems a lot of Australians are very passionately against boat people/Muslims without knowing anything more than "boat people are bad and Muslims are terrorists" and that saddens me.
