    Default Bleeding on depo provera

    Hi
I'm on depo provera just over a month & 5 days I started bleeding & no sign of it getting less..I can't remember if its one of the side effects

Has anyone else had same issue?
Or is there a better contraceptive to be on as I don't like having periods let alone bleed when I'm not supposed to be..

I was on the depo shot for 6 months and had constant bleeding. My doctor said it would more than likely stop and become regular eventually but by that time I was so sick of it I decided depo wasn't for me.

Exactly this happened to me when I tried the depo provera. When I spoke to the gp he told me that sometimes it happens if you don't produce enough oestrogen or progesterone (I can't remember which one he said to me as it was 11 years ago) I had to go back on the oral pill and the bleeding stopped. I can sympathise its horrible.

I just spoke to the GP today regarding options for Miss18 and she recommended against depo because long-term studies have shown that it increases the risk of osteoporosis later in life. She would only recommend it for an intellectually disabled patient where they had limited choices of options.

We also asked about implanon and she said that it works well for 1/3 of patients, whilst a further 1/3 have light bleeding, and the final 1/3 have heavy bleeding.

I used to do bone density scans at your gp is correct long term use of depo provera increases osteoporosis risk.

Before i had DD i was on depo for 5 years and didnt bleed once. Since i have had DD tho i spot throughout the month. Very fristrating. I am going back onto the implanon as i did not bleed on that. Hopefully it does not turn out the same as depo. Maybe speak to your DR of Family Planning to see if they have any suggestions?
