Buy private. Get the car checked over by a mechanic or RACQ etc before and do a REVS check. Check service history.

You will spend more if you buy from a car yard

    This.

Definitely get the car checked over by someone you can trust. Certain cars have certain things that require mechanical work at different kms, so get a mechanic to check it over and make sure it's all looked after.

Don't be scared of second hand cars, just cover all your bases.

I've never bought new, I'm not phased by second but I do all my own mechanical work so I'm not worried about what I'm looking at. If I am ever unsure I ask a mate.

That's not so much the case now, a lot of dealers are actually selling for the same as private and will include warranty. It just means that the person trading the car in got less money for it then they used to.

We were looking for newer model cars recently (still kind of are) and were only looking at private because we thought the same as peanut monkey, only to bite the bullet and look at a few dealers to find they are comparible in price.

Things I would do when buying second hand:
    -check service history
    -revs check
-most likely buy at a dealer that gives you warranty
    -mechanics check
-shop around and don't be afraid to say no!

If you're buying private, you really can't forget the revs check BEFORE you hand over money, also make sure you have a timestamped receipt and all registration papers filled out accordingly. Try to pay with a bank cheque as it safer than cash.
