Default how long for newborn on medicare card

Just wondering how long it has taken other recently to receive their updated medicare card after their baby arrived?

My baby is 6 weeks old and we sent off the newborn forms (in the pack from the hospital) when he was 1.5-2 weeks old. I have received his birth certificate, and our baby bonus has started to be paid, but I haven't received a new medicare card. He has been sick so the GP bills are piling up waiting for the new card so I can claim the fees at medicare.

Is there another form I'm meant to fill in? I thought it was covered in the baby bonus/family assistance form.

    Thanks for your help.

I believe you have to order one? Go into Medicare . They can print off the number straight away on a piece of paper and do your refunds too.

Keep all bills from doctors and if you havent recieved the card by next week head down to medicare and ask them whats going on and then give them the bills to get refunded for. Im pretty sure your child is covered as soon as you sent of the form. It took me a while to get mine but was only 3 weeks I think. They may have already sent it but lost in the mail.

Default how long for newborn on medicare card

It took ages for ours to come for DS - about 8 wks. I kept thinking that I had filled in something wrong but it finally arrived. Maybe give them a call to see if they can give you the number whilst you wait for the actual card to arrive?

    Best of luck

You should be able to go to Medicare and claim the money back anyway without your card. As a pp said they print you off a little thing that has your new number on it that is valid to use at the doctors etc.

Also I'm waiting for my new card to arrive and I lodged it before Christmas too and the lady said that because their offices close over christmas it can take longer.

With my DS1 i knew someone working at medicare so it was sorted in no time.
With DS2 i think it took a few weeks.
Most of the time your regular doctor will bulk bill (provided they do anyway) and let you call up with the new card details when you receive it.

We went to the Medicare office and got a piece of paper with his number on it right away and then the card came a few weeks later.

I believe it does take a fair while longer if you do it via FAO/Centrelink.

I don't have my card yet either, but she has been issued a number. The gp practice can look them up through your number. I've managed to get bulk billed for all of her appointments. I haven't however got my baby bonus yet! Put my forms in on December 10, 35 days is up tomorrow, hopefully I'll get it soon.

It took 12 weeks for DS to be added to my card... I ended up calling Medicare, and the lady was so helpful! She sent me out the paper forms to do fill out (we don't have a Medicare Office) and a reply paid envelope to return them, and I got my new card within the fortnight!

She said that it takes longer if you send the forms through Centrelink, because they have to sort them, and then send them on to Medicare.

    Good luck!!!
