I have two children with average names and two with "unique" names, but they're spelt correctly and aren't cruel IMO. But my name isn't spelt traditionally and it frustrates the cr@p out of me, but I'm also glad that because its spelt different, people have been less inclined to shorten it (I hate the short version, it makes me cringe, but won't say it in fear of offending anyone named it lol)
FTR their names are Ethan, Cooper, Autumn and Israel.

I remember going to school with twins whose names were Sarah and Caroline and thinking it was so unfair that one had a short name and the other long, wouldn't it have been fairer to name their Sarah and Carol or Stephanie and Caroline? (That was the logic from 9yo me.)

That said, my eldest complains that we were children when naming her. We picked what we thought was an unusual name from Ireland, but in fact was the 13th most popular girls name in Queensland in the year she was born.

My DS goes to a school where he is in the minority being a caucasian child. It's a multicultural school where a lot of migrant children attend. Some of the names I cannot pronounce, and have never heard them before in my life. I quite like that they aren't all named similar like when I went to school, I know so many Marks and Michaels and it causes a heck of a lot of confusion (used to work with three Marks - now work with FOUR - good luck answering the phone and being asked "is Mark there?").

As for the Tinkerbell type names, I think people should keep in mind that this is a child, not a pet and they have to live with it for their entire life. You will be calling it out several times a day.

Unusual and unique because of a cultural background, or a special name to you - good. Unusual because your favourite cartoon character was whinnie the poo so you name your kid whinnie - bad.
