Default What will happen to my hands?

Does anyone out there have any information or experience with osteoarthritis???

I fear I might have it. The other day I noticed a bony lump on my knuckle. At first I just thought I must have bumped it without knowing, but the more I inspected it the less I believed it was caused by a bump.

After some googling I'm pretty sure this lump is a Bouchard's node. Other symptoms I experience are swollen, stiff and achey joints. My hands have always been a bit iffy, but I always passed it off as over use. The aches and pains have seemed to have gotten worse lately. And the finger with the bony lump is particularly sore.

I'm an artist and I am frikkin' petrified of losing function in my hands. I need full mobility! I'm going to the Dr tomorrow to have it checked out, but I'd like to go in with some knowledge.
What is going to happen to my hands????? Will this continue to get worse?

You do learn to cope if you don't stop. My mother has arthritis (psoratic) in her hands, no Fine finger movements as she only has one top join that works.

She has had this for 15+ years and still sews, knits, writes, types, she can crochet if she has to but hates it as much as I hate knitting so tends to make me do it. She does have trouble changing needles on sewing machines, but I say that's a visibility issue as I am the same. She does cross stitch and long stich, has issues opening Jars a, bottles, cans but you can buy tools to help out or Make a child do it ("Child Proof" is a challenge not an assurance).

I am unsure how different Osteo is but she finds the Osteo in her knees is more painful/ annoying then the Psoratis in her hands or the Rheumatoid in her back.

My father had Rheumatoid in his hands and that caused issues with hand seizing mind action.

Dr. Google can be more harm then help. Wait until you get a proper diagnosis from your real Dr. before you start worrying about it.

Fingers crossed it's something that's easily treatable.

    Thanks everyone.

    - So are you saying that movement helps? I'm a tad confused about whether I should be resting my joints or carrying on as usual.
Also, how was the pain progression for your parents? Did it happen suddenly or was it a slow gradual onset?

Disbride - Trust me, I joined the conga line for crazy long before I googled anything! It wasn't google alone that caused me concern. I had an ESR blood test last year (tests for inflammation) that came back high, plus I've had elevated white cell counts for a long time. All of this, plus the appearance of a bony protuberance are symptoms of arthritis.

The pin comes and goes. If you keep up doing the activities you want to do where you an you will find that you adjust the way you do them so you still cope with doing them.
