Default 34weeks pregnant and baby's kidney dilation getting worse

Button glad to hear that your beautiful DS has a good outcome ahead!
OP I can verify that even if you only have only kidney (as Button said creatins under 100) you can be completely 'normal' - I only know as I am a living kidney donor.
All the best for your little one

My now 2.5 yr old son had this..we found out during my scans whilst pregnant. There is a technical name of what he has..can't remember it though..wil have to hunt for dr reports. One kidney is larger than the other and has ben ever since then. when he was born in the first few days they did an ultrasound to check to see if it was still enlarged and since then we have been back about 3 our 4 times to the hospital for ultrasound, dye and mag 3. It had never gotten worse which the specialist is pleased with. They checked the kidney drain out time with the mag3 and found that inge takes significantly longer to empty than the other. I wont go into all the detail..very long. But now w only have to go and have the tests once a year and as of this year only the ultrasound and no mag 3( yay..i dont like that one at all) and wil keup doing this for quite some time.
The main problems were if he got a uti.. It can be bad for their kidneys so if we ever thought he had one w went to the dr or er. Specialist has said though that if he gets another uti (only had one so far ) that he would consider surgery to fix the prob. Sorry for the long post. Every case is different I guess but they do say that it can fix itself after birth so I'm hoping this happens for your little one. Our son is perfectly healthy otherwise..you would never know once kidney wasn't perfect. Oh they also suggested he be circumcised to lessen the chance of getting a uti..but we had already chosen that it can be so worrying..i know how you must be feeling if that helps. Best thing is though that they have found it early and can keep an eye out for it once he/she is born. All the best

Default 34weeks pregnant and baby's kidney dilation getting worse

Hi OP. I'm not sure about bubs, but I have this. I have a PUJ obstruction that's causes it.

My left kidney is 1.5cm larger than the right at times. I often get pain if I don't drink enough water and am prone to kidney infections due to urine flowing back into the kidney rather than down the ureter. Drinking plenty of water helps.

As a child I often had uti's but it wasn't discovered until two years ago when I was admitted to ED with a severe kidney infection.

I've had quite a few tests, scans etc, but it doesn't seem to be getting worse.

    Good luck.

Hi buttoneska.. No one has eversaid anything about toilet training our of it would be harder..we are doing it atm actually and he had been really good at going to the potty and haven't had that much trouble. he only had to have antis when he got the uti..they did suggest he may have to have them after he was born but they never had to give them to him. Isn't it terrible but I can't remember if they did blood tests for it..they may have..so many tests and blood taken when they are born I can't remember..lol lack of sleep sole done of my memories I think I find the mag 3 write upsetting the first time it was done though..he cried like gell when they had to put the cannula in his hand but they are so young they forget in a sec and my ds always ended up falling asleep on the table during the test.last time at 2 years old he didn't even cry with the needle..the ultrasound s are fine..even had a cathida when he was young when checking to c if it was kidney reflux and he didn't cry.

Default 34weeks pregnant and baby's kidney dilation getting worse

Wow thanks so much for the information. So detailed and so much help. Button you've been through so much!! As far as I know baby's left kidney is absolutely normal. Baby's right kidney is dilated (at the moment it's around 27mm compared with the 'normal' side 8-9mm). It seems that it is functioning, the fat around the kidney is there so that's good, we have a good amount of fluid around bubs in general. Bladder is normal but the tube from right kidney to bladder is also slightly enlarged. Seeing OB tomorrow so hoping to get a little peace of mind. I pray for my baby's health every day and it really makes me feel better that other people have been through this with their newborns...scary enough time already!! Thanks again xx

Out tube is enlarged too. Where it meets at the bladder (think that's the right spot) the gap its too small causing the tube to fill up more causing the kidney to be larger..if that makes sense. Sounds like our bubs are similar

    good luck with your appointment!

I forgot to say Finn come with us back to the ward and had no immediate issues. At 48hrs he was admitted to NICU for dehydration/weight loss, jaundice and an infection even though he was on anti's from birth. he was put on iv fluid/antis as well as his normal antis (and had phototherpy).

he was in there for about a week I think? They kept him a little longer over a weekend as he had his U/S and dye test on teh Monday nd no point discharging him.

I live 2hrs from Melbourne and they discharged me to my sister place in Melbourne under hospital in the home until his care was taken over by the Childrens on the Friday.

After our appointment on the Friday the childrens discharged us and he is now treated as an outpatient.

All up Ithink it was about 2 and half weeks until we got to come home.

I was prepared for that before the birth so it wasn't quite a shock it could have been.

Maybe just prepare that worst case scenario bubs may spend some time in hospy. It was tough but at the same time reassuring that they were getting to the bottom of things rather then sending me home with no clear answers.

Thanks mumma yeh it def sounds like we're in similar situations...how far along are you? And do you know if you're having a boy or girl? We don't know what we are having but read that this problem is far more apparent in boys
