Unhappy 4.5 month old - just wont sleep and its getting worse

I am so desperate for advice from anyone who has been in the same situation and has managed to make it work more successfully. My 4 and 1/2 month old was an ok sleeper up until a month ago but now resists going to bed at all. Days or nights its all the same, she screams until I have to pick her up and falls asleep on my shoulder OR half the time she continues to carry on and scream even though she is being cuddled. Naps are only ever 45 mins and then night times she is waking every 2 hours. Any advice please???

Have you considered a sleep specialist/dr? Iv just given into my 19 month old who is a shocking sleeper. I wish I did it months ago! Everyone was telling me to take her to one but I felt like if I did I wouldv failed as a mother! In the end it's my sanity that's more important.

Or maybe take her to see your dr, has she been checked for colic at all?

Looking into sleep specialist last few days cause 3 days of every 2 hours is driving me bonkers. Up until now I felt the same way - like I failed in some way cause I cant fix her sleep issues. She doesnt fit the picture of a colic or reflux baby. I have also had a suggestion to see an infant chiropractor cause she was breech when she was born and stuck in a very awkward position leading to a c-section so now that she is starting to sit up it was suggested maybe the ramifications of that breech position are now causing issues? Dont know really.

Are you able to see your community health midwife for advice? Ours recommended wrapping bub in a cot sheet and, with perseverance, we found it really helped. At three months he only catnapped during the day but by five months he had proper 90-minute morning and afternoon sleeps.

This tends to happen around that age for quite a lot of babies.

DS was a shocker at 4 months. We persevered for weeks with no results.

We ended up taking him to sleep school for a two days. The midwife (she was an ex Tresillian nurse) was amazing. She was very supportive, knowledgeable and truly, our saviour.
After returning home, continuing with what she taught us, and DS, within 3 nights, he was sleeping 10-12 hours per night with no waking and having 2 x 3 hour day sleeps, all self settled.

It was the best $200 I have ever spent!

The same thing happened to my DD and drove me nuts until I was recommended 'Your sleepless baby' by Rowena Bennett.

She talks about babies of this age becoming more demanding to go to sleep, and also wanting to return to sleep when they wake up the same way they were settled (ie cuddling, patting etc).

She also gives different options for getting to the final goal of babies self settling, which is what I liked. She outlines methods for doing it quickly (and so bubs may get upset but the change will happen faster) or in stages (works more slowly but is easier on bubs).

Apparently she used to work as a child health nurse at Ellen Barron sleep school in Brisbane.

I downloaded it as an e-book or I assume there are hard copies getting around.

It gets the thumbs up from me - my DD now is a dream - self settles for all sleeps and sleeps 11 hours at night.

    Good luck!

Hi. My baby is now 7 months but I was in the same boat as you. He was better at night but he was waking every 3 hours for feeds but day naps were only ever 40 minutes (1 sleep cycle).
I ended up calling a sleep consultant to come to my house to teach me how to settle bub. It sounds like your baby has the same thing my baby had-- not knowing how to transition to the next sleep cycle. Anyway with the sleep consultant, it's like going to sleep school, but not having a 6 week waiting period. It's hard because she shows you what to do, but from there you have to do the work yourself, but at least you're equipped with a better understanding of sleep cycles and settling techniques.
He now has good day sleeps and sleeps 11 hours at night.
Going to sleep school or having a sleep consultant is not for everyone. Honestly speaking, I am a bit traumatised by the sleep training, but I felt I had no choice. So maybe think it over and good luck if you decide on going down this route.

Thanks. I have now made an appointment for an overnight stay with a sleep lady who will come to our house and help us implement some new sleep training. I know it will be mega hard but I dont feel I have any options left!
