Default School shoes - leather shoes or trainers?

DS is starting school in 3 weeks. The school allows the students to wear trainers but I have been told they will be enforcing a black shoe policy in the near future. However, I look at black leather school shoes and despair. Apart from the fact they are heavy and hot I don't think they are especially good for 5 year olds to wear and he will be wanting to climb, skips, run etc.

Is there such thing as black trainer style school shoes?

I buy Jack black sneakers (decent quality) because as a boy .. sigh .. he trashes shoes ..

I never did the spiffy black lace up shoes because a) velcro rocks in prep .. and sneakers are easily get-able with velcro .. and Jack doesn't do the whole sit still thing .. so I thought sneakers more appropriate for him.

Lots of the girls wear the mary-jane (I think they are?) type shoes that are really pretty .. but Jack likes to run around/ play in the garden and I just found black sneakers a better match for him

We get the black ascent school shoes from footlocker for the formal uniform, and their black trainers for sports.

the formal shoes are very light compared to conventional black leather school shoes and DS10 has no problems running around/playing sport in them.

Heaps of schools have this policy (ours is starting it this year) and yes, you can get all-black trainers.

You can get them from various shoe stores, sports shoe stores and also from department stores. Payless shoes also has some leather trainers in both fully white or fully black - I think they're Slazenger or something.

I buy my kids Asics trainers in blue & white (school colours) they prefer it & it means I don't have to worry when they have sport.

I've decided that I'm going to fork out for good Clarks shoes for DS (he also starts school this year for the first time). I had a look at the ones they sell in The Athlete's Foot and they seem pretty light weight and look comfortable. I like that they're full grain leather so they should last him nearly all year if I get a size that allows for a bit of growth.
