Hi , have not read other replies yet but just wanted to say we have just been through this with our 4 yer old boy. He flat out refused to sit on big toilet . I was getting really over it and questioning where to go from here as he is 4!! So i decided I can't give up but I can give in , I put the potty back in the living room and the toilet steps and little seat on toilet and stayed at home and stopped talking about it . I said to myself he can sort this out and ill clean him up and not say anything . He did sort it out himself . He uses both potty and toilet , up to him on how he feels . I say nothing. If he uses the big toilet he gets a cool spider man sticker and we put it on the sticker chart in the bathroom. If he uses the potty I'm just not saying anything. He stays dry though . He wears a nappy to bed.

My son also has autism ( high functioning) but I think at 4 they are old enough whatever the reason for the late toileting to figure it out and choose . No kid wants to be wet or dirty for days and days.

If you can cope with cleaning him up and staying neutral and take pressure and emotion out of it and only reward big toilet poos and wees I think he may come around to the idea.

I had a toilet phobia and took a potty to school age 5 ! I just remember my mum constantly talking about the toilet and i honestly remember the pressure she put on me which I think created my intense fear also.

Good luck , he will get there .

Ps my son was holding on ... He would sit on couch and not move . I had to get him from preschool as he would not go and he was feeling ill. But they can only hold on for so long ! a few times I let him go on the grass outside too. I would say to him it's your choice , are you a baby or a big boy ? If your a big boy you need to go potty or toilet now , you will get a special suprise for big toilet ok?

Then I would say no more about it and suffer it out for a week.

I have a 22 month old and a 3 month old also and it was a pain in the ****! But he got it the minute it became his choice.

I'm going to start taking the potty away in a few weeks as he 80% of the time chooses toilet now.

My ds refused the potty and only finally used the toilet when he could see daddy uses it and he stands! Wow I can be like daddy.
    He was 4.
