What is the best way to get experience in admin so you can gather a decent set of skills for 'selection criteria'? Temp work? Everyone has to start soemwhere.

I've worked in the government sector where I've vetted applications and and done interviews. The secret to answering selection criteria is to give an example of where you've displayed the skill set being described (eg.verbal/non verbal communication).

While some people do present better on paper, and some people present better in person, in most jobs, you need to be able to do both.
exactly. I don't think alot of people understand that you need to give an example of your experience when addressing selection criteria, it's ok to state you have the skills but it's not proof that you actually do. You need an example to back it up.

Meh, I am very good at my job, but not good at writing essays... So according to that, I shouldn't have my job?

    Cool.

To answer a question earlier. I had a diploma in pharmacy and had been working in a clerical role in pharmacy so for me with that experience it was easy for me to progress to a more in depth and higher paying clerical role which is now risk management. My position requires alot more knowledge and skill that many admin positions. I require drug knowledge and clinical knowledge such as medical terminology. I have had a few people with master degrees attempt to fill my role while I took maternity leave that just did not do a good job at keeping up with the requirements of the position. Not all admin positions are the same. They range from level 1 to level 4 because they all have different requirments.

Regarding the mining industry. My dh is a supervisor coordinator for a large company. He works 12hr days working a 12days on 9day off roster. He gets paid for his time off, he gets a bonus of $12,000 paid once per year, he gets additional super paid by his employer and insurance paid. He gets 5 weeks annual leave and is paid sick leave. All mining companies are different.

It really does depend which company you work for. Here in WA if you work for path west and work in the hospitals you get paid $25 ph but you start a lot earlier than I do.

The old company I worked for and the one I now work for have just recently merged and the old company get paid $23 hr so hopefully ours will go up too.

Not that you shouldn't have your job, you obviously got your job, so that lays that to rest. If you needed to address selection criteria when you applied, you must have done it satisfactorily, if you didn't need to address selection criteria, it's a moot point. Besides, brief and concise is the better way to go when addressing any application for work.
