In the hard times? Buy bulk. Write down what you have (already in the house and money wise) and what you need before going to buy food/pay bills and stick to it. If you're struggling with bills and you can get away with paying one late (ie it has a tiny late fee or are an understanding company) then postpone for a week/fortnight until next pay to help.

Keep a list of the contents of your freezer. We were amazed by how much stuff we had in there when we finally cleaned it out. We now have a whiteboard on the pantry door that lists everything. We then menu plan from what we already have.

I cleaned out my freezer today and found more meat and veggies than I thought I had. Well be using pp idea of the list now. Also pantry. I have tins that I buy on special. Always stock up on nappies and wipes. We also pay a bit of our bill every week so once every few months we don't have a bill or can keep ahead until we need it.

Use your credit card to your advantage. Keep your cash in a savings account and use your credit card for purchases in the way you normally would your debit card, transfer the money at the end of the month (or interest free period) and wipe the balance.

Then at the end of the year use your accumulated card points to convert to gift cards - you can use them for Christmas groceries or presents or just Boxing Day splurges.

If your grocery shop comes in under budget one week throw in gift cards to make up the difference and you can use those on 'tight' weeks. Generally an extra $10 will disappear during a week and won't be set aside for a rainy day, but if you turn it into a grocery gift card it will be.
