I have just seen a poster here at work for an orgnaisation called Send Hope. It seems like a wonderful idea, to support women in developing countries with extremely high maternal mortality rates, rather than send flowers when an Australian woman has a baby.
There are links to the photographs which inspired the organisation, which show 18 year old Mamma Seesay in Sierra Leone dying giving birth to her twins. It is very shocking to see, so be careful where you click if you are pregnant. But I guess that's the point; that women there have a 1 in 8 chance lifetime risk of dying in childbirth. Something to think about if you are expecting to be inundated with flowers, as most of us are when we have a baby.
