Default Little girl permanently removed from her good single mother :(

I guess we don't know what DOCS involvement was (if any) and we will never know for privacy reasons. We also don't know how much time these other carers spent with the girl etc.

This is the case with most people with intellectual disabilities. But they are vulnerable just the same.

    Slight...mild...semantics.

The point, apart from this being unfair on this poor mother, is that a child can be taken from a perfectly fine parent because someone else says they will be a better parent.

The picture for us, as a mothers and fathers, is that if someone can prove they can be a better parent to our children than we are, our court system can grant them custody.

If I have an accident and end up in a wheelchair, would that also be a reason for my children to be taken away?

What about someone fighting breast cancer?

So, how do we take action to change this and also hopefully in the process support this girl?

    - I accept that there are details we don't know and if more transparency were given, it might come to light that the child is better off with the relatives...

I am happy to write a petition and email it out to anyone who is interested in signing. This law seems to be wrong on so many levels.

A child should not have to raise their own parent. Soon this girls age will be above that of her mothers. Then what happens?

Most people with mild intellectual disabilities are difficult to spot. They're mostly high functioning members of society. It is judgmental to think she can't look after her child.

How many of you actually know somebody irl with a mild intellectual disability?
