If you go baby bath stuff, don't go Johnsons. I know so many people who don't use this brand. I would go for a more natural soap free product.

    Nappy Sacks
    Nappy Bag
Mirror for the car - so u can see the baby when the seat is rear facing

This may be branded impersonal or thoughtless, but the most practical gift I received was some coles myer gift cards, we used ours towards a high chair and portacot. Plus if new parents are struggling financially they can use it towards groceries and nappies.
Other useful gifts that dd1 still uses is dinner sets plus she was given clothes in size 2 rather than just tiny baby clothes.

Dd got so many impractical gifts... And I could barely afford to eat because the ex would spend all his money on games... :l so yeah. Practical gifts rocks. When people give me something I need it makes me really feel like they thought about me, even if its something I could get myself from woolies. "Here, I got you some low chemical laundry powder cos I know you'll be doing lots of washing and I know you like that environmentally friendly stuff."

Whereas a cheap stuffed toy does nothing for me. Dd is two, and doesn't care for most of her stuffed toys. She likes a little pink bunny which is the perfect size to cuddle, a jointed bunny my cousin got her, and all her plush hand puppets. I think its because most of the stuffed toys are too big for her, the ones she likes are quite small.

Low chemical washing powder, low chemical surface cleaner, bottle of dettol, nappies in the next size up or cloth nappies if they're using cloth...
The nicest thing someone did for me was bring me food- lots and lots of fresh healthy food I could eat one handed without heating up, when I was in bed. I had to stay in hospital for a while and I couldn't last the 12 hours between dinner and breakfast. I also struggled to move around. I ended up eating the abandoned crusts in the tea room because it was 2am and I was so hungry! Food is an awesome gift.

Home delivered meals. Either professional or you

If you are close by you could give vouchers for babysitting , cuddles for an unsettled baby - sanity saver, meals or anything else you can think of.

A practical pack , pegs, bonjela, infacol, panadol, dummy, washing powder and soaking bucket

A voucher would be good too - they can then use it for clothes or anything else. Food as a pp suggested.

Lots of good ideas. I ended up buying three sets of those coloured links - one for the car seat, one for the pram and one for the nappy bag - to attach toys to, so maybe a set of those? Disposable change mats, Panadol (infants and adults lol), hand sanitiser ..
