    Default Low AMH,normal FSH

I'M 38 and half and just got back a bad result for AMH at 1.6 on cycle day 3 ..my fsh came in at 6 it had been tested (the fsh ) at day 21 was 6 too.. just been off the pill 3 months nearly and newly married..

my day 21 on the fsh was done through a clueless doc who said everything was fine don't worry... but i got my amh tested through another doc has come back and its sooooo low I can't believe it I'm in shock..been crying all day.

had alreayd a referral for FS as i had fears of this....so am booked for next tuesday.

What do I say to him ? whats the process.Do I have any hope?

do my fsh levels have anything to do with anything?

My doc says I am low on vit d,iron, vit c and need to up my fish oil and see a chinese herablist and accupuncturist?

whats peoples thoughts do I have any hope.my doc says most docs would give up....

    whats that supposed to mean?

I'm in a similar boat - I had an AMH test that came back at 5.6 with a day 3 FSH of 8. The doctor who gave me the results was distinctly untactful - just said "Wow, that's low" and didn't give me much information - just left me to walk out of there feeling devastated.

Fortunately, my naturopath was far more helpful and optimistic. She firstly noted that my Vit D was very low, and there are published studies showing a link between low Vit D and suppressed AMH readings. It is not guaranteed, but increasing Vit D intake can sometimes result in an improvement in AMH results.

She also noted that AMH is a measure of ovarian reserve - how many eggs are left - and not whether those eggs are good quality, or whether you're ovulating. AMH is mainly used to assess how you'd respond to IVF treatment (ie. what dosage of drugs to put you on, and how many eggs are likely to develop at a certain dosage). Your FSH is probably a better indicator of how your body is working right now, and your result there is great - it suggests your body hasn't had to work too hard to recruit a follicle this cycle.

My naturopath also told me that because AMH is a fairly recent test, protocols aren't set in stone. She feels that the way some labs store, transport and then test can adversely affect the result, so you may get a different result if you have the test done elsewhere.

I actually had blood taken last week for a repeat AMH test (at a more reputable lab where they do the testing on site, and after supplementing with Vit D for two months) so was hoping to know by now if my AMH result had changed. However, the company in France that supplies reagents to Australian labs for AMH testing has run out of stock, and most labs won't have a supply for another month or so. Talk about frustrating!

I've also booked in with a FS for February, because the AMH result initially freaked me out. (Don't feel alone - I was also hugely upset and angry and cried a lot after getting my initial AMH result). Don't give up hope yet - your FSH is great, and your GP isn't a fertility specialist! The FS will be able to give you a more informed opinion about your treatment options. In the meantime, there are lots of great stories on here about women with low AMH who went on to have lovely healthy babies - I hope they help you to feel more hopeful.

thankyou so much for responding I am very confused and very devastated... it is crazy what you go through the running around and the lack of empathy..for me I met my other half late in life and yes i do regret not finding somebody earlier in my life... while i don't believe my periods are timing greatly and they are somewhat relatively just coming off the pill.To be at 38 I am quite concerned .I am going to the FS next tuesday and hopefully I will have some sort of idea on when and where to progress to.I am so glad i had got the referral earlier this year , i must of known deep down I would be in trouble all the best to you and let me know how your going.

I appreciate your response it has helped me
