Default Re: Am I ripping off my babysitter?

I feel like i am ripping off the people who i pay to mind DS if i need someone. I generally pay $50 overnight to someone as i generally only do 5hr or 8hr shifts and thats nearly half my wage for one shift but they appriciate it.

I agree, sounds like she enjoys doing it for the extra money. I could be paying my cleaner more but she is doing it for pocket money as she moved over here not long ago and she enjoys doing it. I am going to raise her amount next year so she stays as i dont want her going to another house .

Default Am I ripping off my babysitter?

Clearly I'm overpaying my babysitter. When I did babysitting (I am a qualified childcare worker) for families at the centre I was getting between $15-$20 an hour. Although other girls would get $150 for overnight or a whole day.
If she seems fine with the amount I wouldn't worry maybe increase it every 6 months or so.

I don't think your ripping her off. She knew what the arrangement was when you employed her and is happy with it so that the most important thing.

We have a similar set up with a lady who we know through the school DP teaches out. We pay $10 an hour an he will bring her youngest son, 4. Though often for us it was not a full day just a couple of hours a few days a week as I work shift work and she drops DS off to DP at work if I work an evening shift.

I would give her 200 . Good trustworthy Carers are hard to find. Even if your child is asleep you can rest easy at work that someone is there 100 % for you child. You just can't put a price on peace of mind .

It does sound a little low $8 ...,,

Is she able to leave the house with the toddler, ie. take her to the shops or an appointment as if it were her child or does she stay at your house all day/only leave the house for child specific duties? Are you paying her cash or is it legit?
I think these things factor in to how much would be acceptable, although I think either way you should raise it to atleast the $200 you're considering.

She doesn't leave the house, If she wanted to I would have no problem with that. She may walk up to the playground at the local school when the holidays start.

    I think $200 sounds fair.

I don't think you are ripping her off. $75 a day cash in hand to look after your kids is good. She isn't a qualified nanny or child care worker, it isn't a career, it's helping you and it's extra money in her pocket. Maybe give her a Christmas bonus if you feel bad. But I think $150- is fine. It's more then I pay my 18 year old babysitter.

I think what you're paying her is fine. If it were me id increase it a bit to ensure she knows you appreciate it and want her to stay.
