Yes I know someone who got caught many many many years ago.

I will say though, it doesnt matter if someone comes from a 'well off family' ....my dad is what you would consider to be 'well off' but doesnt mean he throws money in my direction. He worked hard to be well off and doesnt mean I can (or will) sponge off them because of that...and before anyone says "Im sure he'd give you money if you really needed it", no...he really wouldnt.

Yes my husband's job is dealing with criminals every day. He says they do come through and they get more time than a pedophile or rapist does!

Default Re: Does anyone know a centrelink cheat who has actually been caught??

I know of someone who list all their centrelink benefits because someone dobbed them in. But the person who dobbed them in, lied. Gave centrelink false information and it took him about 3 months to get his pension back... He was a war veteran and served in the aus army for 15 yrs! He wasn't working and was supporting 3 kids with a 4th on the way... This person told centrelink he was working and that he wasn't in Australia legally, yet he was a citizen...

Things do get done, I just believe it has to do with the severity of everything... Some things are worse than others...

My mom is the same, she will not give me money no matter what. She raised us and sent us out into the world plenty educated enough to take care of ourselves. My sister gets so angry with her but I see her point its her money that she earned and saved so she can have a good retirement why should she have to give us her money because we cant manage? No on ever believes me when I tell them she wont lend or give money but she really wont.

I know a few people screwing the system, but I don't think either has been sobbed in.. one is one of my closest friends and I find it really hard not to say something because I think its so wrong.

It's not constant, but a few times a year she'll do a job where she gets paid up to 2 grand CASH!! a week and doesnt declare it.

I just hate people that do this because its us as tax payers that pay their dole/single parent pension etc. I work hard for my money and get taxed a substantial amount. I'd rather that money went to people that truly need it.

Default Does anyone know a centrelink cheat who has actually been caught??

I work for a charity that deals with giving finance to people on Centrelink to purchase household items and I have seen numerous people get caught and have to pay back the money to Centrelink, I think with cash jobs it is a little harder to get caught but if the persons assets are increasing and they a technically only receiving Centrelink payments they will probably get investigated which takes a bit of time as they get a whole lot info on the person first. The other things like getting a job a not declaring it, gets picked up easily as the persons tax file number is linked to their CRN and the Ato and Centrelink work very closely together, not to mention the person has to provide bank statements etc every so often to Centrelink. It is annoying when people try and rip off a system that was put in place to help them, and that our tax paying dollars go to funding.

Re: somebody running their own business, if something is a 'hobby' you dont have to declare the income to the ATO. I'm not sure of the definition of hobby but the tax office website will have further info. FIL is a landscape painter and he sometimes wins prizes that might be 2K or so and its classed as a hobby. However I think thats fair as he spends a lot on paints, frames and driving his paintings around which he cant declare as tax deduction.
In the first family mentioned, maybe they claim lots of expenses and deductions for the business to say its not earning that much because its got too many expenses. If you do this too often the ATO will investigate though. A lot of rich people used to claim things as a tax loss but you cant easily get away with it any more.

    ETA sorry misread first post.

my sister used to work for centrelink, so I know of many people who were caught. Its amazing what they can check (ie if your payments are $400 and your rent is $350, and you arent declaring any work, then they assume you are working cash, and will investigate, or if you were partnered, then 'separated' but had another child during the 'separation' they assume you were together the whole time, and you have to back pay the payments)

Yep that would be fraud. She is obviously running a cash business if that's the case n that opens a whole other world of problems if she's caught.
