In Saw especially, you kind of need to see them going through the pain. The pain is the consequence of their choice and kind of like a form of Karma. The junkie had to roll around in a pit of needles to show herself how she was treating herself (like a pin cushion) etc.
How does such a graphic scene of hacking "your" own leg off fit into that? The argument of having to do something you don't want to in order to save yourself doesn't sit well with me. That is no guarantee of survival in that case. You can make the point but you don't have to go as far as saw did. IMO. But I do get what you mean.

Sounds like a similar concept to Seven, where people were being punished for their sins in a way that reflected their sins (quite horrifically). That movie had relatively little violence in it but still got the message across quite strongly, so it's definitely possible for a good movie maker to do this. Do you still think Saw would have been as good a movie if handled like that?

Like how do we know that people arnt reacting aggressively due to watching driving miss daisy maybe that movie had a negative impact on them. I dont think I am explaining my points well but meh in the end I dont believe the studies relating horror movies to making people violent. Yes maybe they would give an already violent murderer ideas but your average person isnt going to be violent because of a movie but thats just my opinion.
Do you understand that graphically violent and scary films produce a physical reaction in the body? They can cause the body to release stress hormones, adrenaline etc. Driving Miss Daisy is unlikely to do this. It stands to reason this physical reaction may prompt other actions.

Did you even read the links to the studies LMF? Because you don't seem to understand what their conclusions were or the methodology they used.

For a start, one of them drew a link between watching violent movies and increased hostility when responding to people. Hmmm.....

Yes but my point was how can they say that? If these people they used to do the study have had any thing that happened in life during the study or before that could change the outcome.

Lmf doesn't have to agree. She may have a different opinion to everyone. She has valid points that studies can be biassed. Personally I can see a correlation. Can't you just agree to disagree. if someone does not believe in something you can't force them. its not that they don't understand, they just don't believe.

I've only skimmed the thread but I do wonder if the increase in violence/gore shown in the recent films mentioned here has anything in common with how you become desensitized to pornography so you need to watch more aggressive pornography to enjoy it. I realize there is a demand for these types of movies but what concerns me is the link between an increase need to see more gore/violence to enjoy it. I liken it to a drug addict needing more and more for it to work.

I hope that makes sense I have a wiggly teething toddler attached to me

I've watched them all, they made my physically sick and again, i don't understand how people can get please or entertainment out of watching people be violently tortured. But then, thats me.

Movies like Human Centipide (which i have not watched) well that is just a different kettle of fish and to be honest, i'd really feel uneasy if any of my friends/family enjoyed watching that for entertainment.
