    Default Torture Porn?

Ok so the USA has stated a bit back that they want to label movies like Saw and Hostel as Torture Porn and either limit them or outlaw them. Whats your take?

I think it is absolutely bull crap. Especially since Saw doesnt even have sexual scenes and not everyone watches them for "sexual gratification" as they put it.

People can be aroused by the strangest things so where would this stop. I love the movies and would like to see more made but this label seems stupid to me.

    Thoughts?

I think you're missing the point with the label torture porn. My understanding (and it goes back quite a long way) isn't that there is anything sexual in the movie, it's that the scenes of torture are shot similarly to how porn is shot ie long, slow and extremely graphic scenes showing women (and it's usually but not always women) being dismembered, or cut into shreds, while the camera almost lovingly shows what's happening. It's a very specific genre, and one that certain people involved in it embraced initially until the backlash.

Personally, I loathe these films. I prefer my films to leave it to the imagination, and I do think there comes a point where the camera has to turn away as the scenes are just so graphic they make people phyisically sick. Therefore I think the availability should be limitd in the same way porn movies are (except to any 14 year old with access to the Internet ).

I am in favour of freedom of speech so I don't think they should be banned. I personally think they are unwatchable and not entertaining. But I accept others won't agree.

Totally agree. I personally can't understand how anyone can get pleasure or entertainment out of these movies, watching people being graphically and painfully tortured. It really makes me wonder. I find it quite disturbing that they are so popular. But thats me, lots of people like them so i don't think they should be banned eiher.

Agreed ^^ It's the fact that they have basically no plot, they're shot like a p0rno and are completely gratuitous. I don't know why anyone would willingly watch one but don't think they should be banned.

    Default Torture Porn?

As Sonja mentioned, it's not about sex or getting aroused. It's about films with graphic, sadistic violence. Kind of like when someone says "food porn", IYKWIM.

I have a couple of friends who are horror film aficionados and they have no issue with the terminology (I'm guessing anyway, because they use it in reference to certain films).

I despise those films personally, they are revolting...but they shouldn't be banned.

I disagree about the no plot part, especially in the case of the Saw movies. Have you ever watched them? The plot is actually quite intricate across the movies. I cannot stand the gore part of it, and refused to watch them for ages but once I sat down and blocked that part out I found them quite interesting. It doesn't turn me on at all, and they are extremely twisted but there is definitely a plot and as twisted as it is, I found it quite interesting. (Once again, the plot not the gore)

I love all sorts of movies, I will see almost any movie. I certainly don't think they should be banned.

Half an hour before I was out. I couldn't and wouldn't sit through any more. I'll take your word that there was an intricate plot, but why the torture, why the need to be so gratuitously graphic and violent?
