It depends on he type, what else is involved, the severity of the case etc. a friend had to pay $10,000 for her sons braces.

With private health depending on how much the braces cost, they might fork out $2500 if youre highly covered. For out of pocket, you could be looking at more than 3-6k for normal braces and $10000 if you choose to have he latest technology ie; invasalign. That isn't included if you need to have teeth taken out for braces, clean and scale, the consults, stuff like that. Nothing is covered by Medicare.

Dd's cost us $7500. Unfortunately we werent in our health fund long enough. And medicare covers nothing.
Apparently some can be claimed back on tax.

I paid about $5,500 for mine, and about $1,250 in dental fees prior, as mine weren't purely cosmetic, I was able to claim at tax time. I didn't have private health at the time and it was approximately 2007.

Mine cost $5500, about five years ago. My case was pretty straightforward and I had the ceramic braces. I had no private health insurance at the time, so I did a payment plan with the ortho ($2000 deposit and then $50 a week).

I worked at an orthodontist until recently, the average for our local area was about 8000 for upper and lower braces. My orthodontist did just one arch for 5000 but I don't think many orthos treat one arch anymore due to the new technology.

Private health insurance seriously rips you off. Most patients could only claim a few hundred dollars back for each year they were receiving treatment.

You can claim some back through tax. I think you can get 20% back of all medical expenses over 2500. So that's all expenses over the course of a year, including other dental and medical.

Paying upfront definitely has it's advantages if you can do it. You will usually get a discount from the ortho and get more back at tax time
