All parties I go to the kids open after everyone leaves. The only reason it bugs me is that after getting my god daughter a really beautiful gift, I never saw her reaction and never got a thank-you. It did bug me and I know her mum re-gifts too so I'm always paranoid! I would also feel a bit uncomfortable if the child opened a gift in front of me and hated it!! Lol!

DS has only just turned one so we opened the presents later. I'm going to take photos of him playing with his presents so everyone will get a thank you card and photo of DS appreciating their gift.

TBH I won't be doing too many parties when he is older, but when we do he can open them in front of his friends, I think the kids love to see their present opened.

Default Open or not open presents at kids party!

so we could thank everyone and everyone saw what he got etc. I think it's part of the fun of going to a kids party is also seeing the joy the child gets from opening their gifts.

As they arrive I find too hard trying to greet guests, managing the unwrapping gifts, making sure he thanks them (or I do, he's 4 and a bit shy with too much attention on him)

Also if they are opened afterwards you really are obliged to write thank you notes really.... otherwise how do you thank the gift giver?

Loved the part where he packed them all up and headed to the door to go home

Hilariously adorable, he must've checked off everything on his birthday party check list.

    Kids - Check
    Cake - Check
    Presents - Check

HOME TIME TO PLAY WITH THEM.

I find it really weird when the presents aren't opened - it kinda irks me, when i've found the right present for the person and I dont get to see the reaction.

If we party at home .. we open the presents as we receive them .. if its a set party (maccas etc) we open them straight after the cake .. when everyone is around to watch.

I have talked to both my boys about etiquette with present opening - eye contact to the person who gave it to you .. thank them .. and try to keep the card with the gift .. lol - we've also had chats about what to do if you already have what you are given .. or if you dont like what you are given .. lol - so hopefully I've minimised the risk of things going wrong ..

Lol I could just imagine my son saying "Doh! Not another one!" if given the same gift twice l.

He has Aspergers though and most at the party would know that... Still unpredictable though!

I was just thinking about this today actually because DS' birthday is next week. I wasn't sure whether we should open them as each person arrives/gives it to him or all at the same time..

I'm leaning towards as he gets them but I want to make sure I'm able to greet and thank everyone properly instead of at the end of the day having no idea who gave him what.

My children have always opened them after the party has finished. I like us to sit down as a family and watch them being opened. A 'Thank You' card is always sent within two days.

All of the parties we go to, no one opens the gifts whilst the guests are there. I have followed this unspoken protocol because it seems 'the norm'. We very rarely receive 'thank you' cards either

Ok, well I'm Gunna do what we've always done and what I was raised doing, and that is open the presents up at the party. All the kids love to see presents being opened and who doesn't love to gander at what the birthday child is given!?
