Just want to add, my family & friends caught in the credit crunch in Europe are all giving very practical gifts this Christmas, clothes are high on the list. Times are tight and the pressure is on the purse

Those of you saying that they are essential, don't you think it's better to spend your money on things they really need instead of things that they just want?

I'm not saying not to buy the other things but if you have a smaller budget then I think it's fine to give some clothes as a present.

I always got a few new outfits and pjs at Christmas, which I loved because we didn't just get clothes whenever we wanted throughout the year.

My kids always get a few clothes in their Christmas presents, almost always an outfit to wear Christmas Day included. I don't think it's lame or being cheap. its just what we do. They get some toys, DD1 is off to kinder so is getting a new backpack / lunch bag, an essential i agree but no reason why Santa can't give it to her. TBH if I didn't include things that are essentials I'd be buying stuff they don't need just to bulk up their presents so it doesn't look lame.

    Yeah, I usually do.

Often PJs, but usually something that's kind of a bit nicer than what I'd normally buy as well.

Yup we do, I loved getting nice new clothes as a kid, and my 4 year old DS loves getting clothes as well. He does also get a lot of other stuff but I see nothing wrong with giving clothes.

Yes, we don't have a lot of money so it gives DSD some extras to unwrap

DD gets a set of pj's or new swimmers - buts its usually because I've seen them and liked them while out present shopping not because she 'needs' them.

I think its kind of like getting school essentials for christmas!
