    Default iPad or Leappad?

It was installed with a software update a while back - the one that introduced iMessage I think.

When you sync it a 'messages' icon should be added to your iPad which allows you to message like a phone does. If you have a wifi iPad it will only work when you are on a wifi network, obviously.

It attached to your email address that is connected to the iPad I think. Or at least it used to - or maybe that is just for wifi iPads and 3G ones attach to the 'number' of the sim.

Mine only seems to work if I send to other iPhone users. I don't need to be hooked up to wifi to send messages.

Had he updated his software? Should work if he has ios5 loaded.

Or perhaps he has iMessage turned off in his settings?

There is a section in settings where iMessage can be turned off. Perhaps there was a glitch and it turned itself off?

Just looked my iMessage is turned off but you can't really send text with it. If both devices are within the same wifi connection basically in the same house it's not the same as being able to text with a phone. Just wouldn't want anyone to buy it thinking you could text with it just like a phone.
