Default What should I expect with my PHI?

Excluding the prenatal visits, I was wondering what to expect to get back.

I have top hospital and extras including maternity and fertility cover and I know I will have a $500 excess.

Aside from that, I have to pay $1800 at twenty weeks, and I'm having an epi.

Do I get a good bit of that part back given we have family cover etc? I will call my PHI during the week, was just wondering if anyone knew in the meantime...

You won't get any of the $1800 management and planning fee back, it is not an hospital or extras service and you will get a small medicare rebate on this. You will probably have a gap to pay for the obstetrician, anaesthetist and hospital, but it totally depends on what they charge. Your health insurer will tell you a bit but you need the specialist fees to put all the pieces together.
    Good luck!

I did get some of the management fee back.
You can find out how much you will get back from both your phi and Medicare.
Just ask your ob office to give you the item numbers for the anaethetist, visits, etc etc and you can call Medicare and your insurer and they can tell you by giving them the item numbers.
It also makes a big difference if you've reached the safety net.

My phi paid out about $60k on my daughter's hospital stay, a few individual's big claims is why the premiums are so high!

You pretty much pay for everything except the hospital stay. Ultrasounds, Obs appt, Obs management fee, paeds to look over baby before discharge, I think some people have to pay some anaesthetist fees. I even had to pay for my sons' cord blood to be tested to see if they were RH + or - (essential as I'm negative.) Medicare will give you some back for some of these things but I personally think its a rip off and wouldn't go private unless you need to (which I did for my twins).

You won't get any of the management fee or the cost of scans, tests etc back from your health cover, but you will get some back from medicare. Once you hit the safety net you'll pay very little for the rest of the calendar year.

You'll probably have to pay a gap for your epidural, unless the anaesthetist no gaps you. That will depend on what mood they're in and what time of day it is - where I live there's definitely a gap to pay if it's the middle of the night .

I didn't pay anything once I was in hospital, that was all covered by my PHI. It ended up being around $10 000 for the five nights I was in. I had a vaginal birth, no epi, so I'm not sure what extra costs there would have been if I'd had to have a caesar.

I was $7,000 out of pocket using private healthcare. $4,500 for OB management fee, the rest gap for hospital/anaethesist/OB visits/ultrasounds etc

    It's a ripoff

I have family cover so the baby itself shouldn't cost me any extra.

Epi I fig'd might be extra but I wasn't sure how much.

Re ultrasounds etc- how much are they typically out of pocket?
