    Default Age for mammogram.

so my cousin has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.she's 38 and has 3 kids:-(:-(breast cancer is pretty rampant in my family.my nan(on my mums side)had it.this year 2 of my aunts and 3 of my cousins have been diagnosed and are currently undergoing treatment.my mum has suggested that I ring my doctor and try to get a mammogram.I'm only 30 but assuming with my family history it will probably be done.do you think my doctor will send me??I'm petrified because I have 3 young girls and obviously its in my family:-(what does a mammogram entail??

Don't know what it entails sorry, although according to my mum it's lots of squishing. But mammograms aren't as effective on younger women due to the nature of younger breast tissue, so they may send you for an ultrasound instead.

Even without the family history if you had reason to be worried then I'm sure your GP would refer you. Twice I thought I felt a weird lump and although my GP was fairly sure all was fine, she knew it would give me peace of mind to get it checked. Both times I was referred for an ultrasound (nothing found either time thankfully).

    Default Age for mammogram.

Check with your doctor. I have a family history too and my OB only advised monthly manual checks for now. He told me to maybe have a mammogram when I hit 40yo but not before.

There has been lots of disturbing studies about mammograms and how this could affect negatively your risk of breath cancer. Please read and gather information before rushing to get tested.

Hugs and sorry about your family and what you are going through. My mum is currently under treatment too

I am sure if you visit your Gp they will be able to refer you for an ultrasound. I am not sure of the age, but my dr said the tissue is softer in younger woman so an ultrasound should be all they need.
I also have a history of breast cancer in my family, and found a lump a few weeks ago! After a freak out I went to my Gp who referred me for an ultrasound. All turned out fine but it is a scary and stressful thing!
    Hugs!!

Especially with the family history i am sure you wont have any problems but if anyone is reluctant be persistant. I had a friend diagnosed at 27! Better get checked and be sure.

Tell that to my friends 2 year old son...at 27 should she have shrugged off what turned out to be stage 3 cancer? Check yourself....ask your gp to check you if in doubt.

Sorry - completely forgot to get the links to the studies I'm talking about.
they are showing rather confronting results.

I hope your friend is ok? As I have said, my mum is under going treatment as the moment so I know how scary and nasty breast cancer can be :-( x
