This Xmas we are trying to save money. I have bought some jars from Kmart/ikea/sams warehouse for $3. Get a recipe for a body scrub off the Internet (tons to choose from, most are just raw sugar, coconut oil and fragrance) and then decorate the jar with ribbon, voila! That will make me a heap of gifts for not much more than the cost of the jar
I'm also making lip balms (one recipe makes like 20) the pots are off eBay for about $10 for 10 jars. And I'm going to make some candles, you can use anything to make candles with, just need a wick and the mixture. Things like old jars, old teacups anything really!
Have a look on Pinterest for inspiration, type in DIY gifts or DIY Christmas. And just surf the web for craft websites. I have just been doing this for the last few days, im really excited to start making everyones pressies, Have fun!

Hi LRA I am not a good sewer but i have made cushions (amatuer ones that cannot be opened) with two contrasting fat quarters they are great and easy. I have also tackled the pillowcase dress three times that is simple and so cute.

I am not sure if u want unsewing related ideas but clay sculpting is fun I have made fairy doors, toadstools, doll house furniture etc i use sculpey clay and no other it is the best!

I also scrapbook a little. I card make alot. If you do a few cards every now and then you can fill a box and grab one out when an occassion arises so fun and no made rush to the shops!

I would make cool pram/stroller liners. They are so expensive and boring looking. But they look pretty easy to make

I was given a copy of a sewing magazine which had awesome ideas such as sewing different materials together to make art to frame and hang on a wall (their example was like an old little village with a tree all cartoon style with basic shapes), there was a pattern for a bib but the back of it is funny so I wouldn't do that one, placemats, and cushions.

When I have spare time and fabric I tend to create a cute new bag for myself (one of those side shoulder ones. I put heaps of pockets inside so I can carry heaps of stuff without losing it in the abyss of a normal bag :B)

I'm getting into the idea of "upcycling" atm. I turned my year 12 formal dress (shiny, pink very 1999!) into a dress for dd, next I am turning dh's old stripey jumper into some pants and a matching beanie for Ds. I also covered a whole bunch of old formula tins in funky wrapping paper and use them as storage for bits and bobs around the house.

How do you upcycle clothes?! I want to do that stuff! (I'm also a bit hopeless at anything not super basic though haha)

With my formal dress, I turned the skirt onto a "pillowcase" dress, there are heaps of patterns online for it, and it is fairly basic. A lot of those pretty little dresses sold at craft markets are pillowcase dresses. I bought an old-fashioned pillow case today to make another one soon.

I'm going to make some pants using the arms of an out jumper. Google "sweater pants", there are patterns for them too. And I saw a really cute pic of an owl beanie made out of the bottom of a jumper, so I figure I will give that a go too.

If it all works out well, next I am going to make a vest out of an old cardi, and a skirt for dd out of an old top that is too big for me but really pretty.

I'll find some links later and post if you want.
