Default Taking combined contraceptive pill while breastfeeding

    Hi,

I have a nine month old who I am still feeding and intend on feeding for the next year or so. I started taking the mini pill when he was 6 weeks but after a couple of months of issues with it I stopped taking it. Anyway, was at the doctor's last week and was speaking to her about contraception and she suggested I start taking the combined pill Estelle.

The problem is that with my first 2 breastfed babies I was told I couldn't take the combined pill as it dries up your milk supplies. I mentioned this to the doctor and she said there was no problem in taking the combined pill once breastfeeding is well established - in fact she said anytime after about 8 weeks. So when I went to the pharmacy to have to get it I asked the pharmacist, who then proceeds to tell me that I should not be taking the combined pill while breastfeeding as not only does it dry up your milk but it also passes hormones through to baby.

I rang the doctor and explained what the pharmacist said, and to her credit she said she'd look into it further and call me back, which she did. She said that it will not dry up my milk and the amount of oestrogen tha would pass through to baby is no more than he will get once my period returns.

So my dilemma is, should I take the pill and run the risk of it drying up my milk, or not take the pill and use other contraception - has anyone else successfully used a combined pill while breastfeeding with no adverse affect?

I should add that this particular pill was perscribed as I have bad skin, and also a Mirena was suggested but I really don't like the idea of that either.

Default Taking combined contraceptive pill while breastfeeding

I used to be on Diane for my skin prior to having my babies. My OB advised that it affect my milk supply, but the main reason not to take it is because I am feeding a boy this time around. If I was feeding a girl, it wouldn't be as much of an issue, but the hormones in my particular pill are not good for little guys. Perhaps there are similar hormones in your pill?

Thanks cindye, Estelle is very similar to Diane, and its good to get a reply from someone who has been advised not to do this from their OB. I think I'll put off going back on the pill unitl I am finished feeding.
