I agree with this. Denial was the first form of defence and they have continued down the rabbit hole of denial.

The church and it's 'rules' for priests etc doesn't turn people into paedophiles. As PP's have said paedophiles are drawn to institutions which allow closeness to children and the catholic church has been a place to hide for many of them just as many other institutions.

Their 'deny all knowledge' mantra has completely backfired and created more publicity, victims to come forward and public outrage, over their complete disregard to the protection of children over the protection of the institution.

Thanks for the interesting discussion so far.

Just reading the paper and the royal commission is going to cover a large range of areas including all religions, schools, state care facilities and non-profit groups (scouts, sports etc).

Such a big undertaking will take a long time but let's hope something actually changes and the end instead of a few recommendations and nothing is done.

any form of child abuse is so sad, I can't understand how anyone can live with knowing about it/covering it up.

I think it's such a blo*dy cop-out using celibacy as an excuse or reason for the abuse of children in the catholic church. Sorry to those who disagree but seriously, do nuns go around abusing children? Women have a sex drive too... I find it a cop-out that on the project tonight they focused almost entirely on how wrong celibacy is. It is wrong, but they made it out as as though it creates paedophiles!

I agree. The very notion is ridiculous. Paedophiles abusing children are not celibate.
