Old thread, but in case others find it and are wondering the same thing I'd suggest maybe trying a couple of short, free courses online (MOOCS) to get into the habit of studying again before going back to formal study. Coursera (coursera.org) offers many free online courses that are created by universities. Most don't offer any formal certificates but it's really good for seeing if university study is for you.

I'm a nurse and the degree is harder then people think. Of the 80 I started with only 12 finished. In nursing it's not the essays I found hard in was the pharmacology and anatomy and physiology subjects. Essay writing is not that hard. There is a specific layout. Follow that and your fine. I found in undergraduate degrees they tend to be a little more understanding and supportive. At postgraduate level it's a whole different story! I always say people think uni is hard until they do it and see the not so smart people getting through!

There are heaps of resources if you're stuck - like professors, tutors - I think all will be fine =)
