I think an intro course would be really beneficial. There is so much assumed knowledge with the diploma, it would have been nice to have some understanding before starting.

    Hi everyone
I'm still here and still plodding away with the course. I have just finished a semester of wound care and care planning subjects and are in the middle of my aged care placement. The placement has been interesting.....beautiful residents and its great to get in there and put nursing theory to practice but man some nurses can be nasty!!! We have had the unit manages yell at students for not making beds properly and staff tell us we can't eat lunch in the tea room because we are students!!! I'm sure not all nurses or workplaces are like this but it is an eye opener to see how students can be treated. Only a week to go and than a week off for Easter followed by a semester of medications, palliative care and domicillary care subjects

Hi girls, I have read a little of this thread and thought I would join in here
I'm starting Diploma of Nursing in August part-time through Tafe (2 days a week and 2 weeks of prac each semester)

I was looking into doing it externally through GCIT though the upfront cost and the fact that i will be away from my kids more in block weeks is too much for us right now. I have 3 children, the eldest in high school and the youngest is 10 months old.

We earn just over the threshold so i can't apply for austudy, so I intend to return to work in childcare 1-2 days a week also to help with finances while I study, this way my baby will be in the daycare centre with me at least, so hopefully not too much of a shock!

Just wondering if anyone else is studying through Tafe and starting this August? I can't seem to get a list of the books or texts that I will need yet.. I'd love to start getting a few together so it's less stressful when I start studying - also I will probably buy them separate from the tafe to make it cheaper.

My goal is to do my EN and later on, in a few years or ten years even.. I will go on to do midwifery as it's where I want to end up

If you go onto the tafe website it should give you a list.
I think they are around $950 for the lot.

You have to be careful doing this as sometimes the books will change by the time the next course starts.

okay.. I called the Tafe this afternoon to ask them a few things.. They said that all textbooks on the site are up to date for this years study so I got the list and a good friend who finished her RN degree last year has the editions of the two expensive textbooks and will lend them to me while another girl has the other textbooks i need (she bought them originally to do my tafe course though ended up going through GCIT and required different books) she is going to sell them to me for a small amount.. The tafe said this is fine and they just recommend me to buy their nursing kit for $50 to make sure i have all that i need in it as the ones on enurse differ in what you get in the kit.

Now if only the outside school hours lady would call me back about putting my daughter on after school care waiting list for august!
