Default Suggestions - bedtime routine for 2 year old

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to get my two year old to improve his sleeping habits. Every book I have read says a nightime routine is the way to do it.

Can anyone share their night time routines and success?

I do work a couple of days a week and don't get home until about 6pm does anyone have any suggestions?

    All help appreciated!!!

DS's (22 months) night time routine is: dinner, play, bath, teeth, warm milk then bed. He generally has dinner around 5pm and in bed by 6 - 6.30pm. He then generally sleeps through til about 6am, although lately he's been waking at 4.30 - 5am.

I don't think time really matters (ie. your dinner and bed times would probably be later than ours considering you don't get home until 6), but more that you are consitant in doing the same things in the same order each night.

DS has been a very poor sleeper in the past, even with a consistent bed time routine, so you might not see any huge changes to sleeping when you first introduce the routine, but I think the benefit is they get to know what happens when and they and get a chance to 'wind down' before bed.

My DS is 19 months and has had the same bedtime routine since 6 months old. He has dinner around 3:30-4:00pm (any later and I find he is far to tired to eat properly) after dinner he gets to play outside and run around for 30-45mins to wear him out then we come inside and do quiet activities with no tv on in the house we read books, colour in or do puzzles he has a bath at 5pm then a bottle, cuddles and bed time is by 5:30pm he sleeps until 7:00-7:30am

DD (2 in a few weeks) has dinner at 6, bath at 6.30 then into pjs, warm bottle of milk, brush teeth, story and into bed between 7/7.15. We've been doing that routine for quite awhile now. She sleeps through until around 6 (7 in winter).

DD and DS have a shower around 4:30 - 5:00.
After showers they can watch TV whilst dinner is being made.
    Dinner
Clean up, jarmies on ready for quiet time.
Lights dimmed, no TV, quiet play in the living room with DF and me.
    7pm, brush teeth, stories, bedtime.
We still have to sit in the room with DD until she's asleep and she wakes during the night to come into our bed though.

DS 2.5 has only recently found a routine that works. We have dinner around 6-6.30, then he gets to watch in the night garden for 1/2hr & sing the goodnight song with hoot. We then brush teeth & he has 1 book that he can read before sleep. Generally he will be asleep within 10mins.

Of course there is the occasional time this doesn't work, but generally only after such a full on day or two that he finds it difficult to self settle & unwind.

Default Suggestions - bedtime routine for 2 year old

DS currently has dinner at 6 with us, then we have a bath or shower (depending on how long it takes him to eat dinner) and then we snuggle up on the couch for a relax for 10-15 just to chill and unwind, we then go and hop in bed and read 1-2 books and then it's night time (7:30-8pm) asleep!
He then wakes between 6:30-7:30am and has his naps at about 1-1:30 for an hour!
    DS is 28 months
