I have decided that in these early stages, learning to Zumba has some highs, and some lows:
Find out about challenge - high
First try at Step by Step - low, when I realised that I would struggle with the rhythms etc
Second go at Step by Step - high, things start making sense and I can do steps much better than previously thought
First try at Activate - Low, just getting flustered when I can't keep up or muff up a step etc
Second go at Activate - high,I can follow along so much better when I am familiar with what is going on.....
Which brings us to today. I was pottering around the house and would find myself doing little Zumba steps. Making lunch, I had to get to the other end of the kitchen bench and I found myself doing a little Salsa travel which led me to think that I was starting to *get* it.
And then I pressed play on the Exhilarate disc.
From the outset I was struggling to really follow and felt completely stupid. I know that I need to do it a few more times, but I hate being bad at things. It wasn't all bad, I liked the belly dance bits, and I actually really liked the tango bits, especially with those deep bends. And I excelled at the cool down .
I think a big hurdle for me is just getting a feel for it all, and possibly being less regimented. I know I need to master the choreography but I think that because it it dance it is also important to have some fun with it too.
(Probably could help to not expect that I am going to be measuring up to Melissa's moves in Exhilarate. She is clearly a very accomplished dancer. I am not.)
