    Default Terrified of birth

Im 12 + 2 weeks pregnant so i still have a while left to go but i am absolutely petrified of giving birth! I know most women are obviously not excited to give birth but i feel its really abnormal how scared of it i am! Has anybody gone through a similar experience or have any tips. I dont want to get myself that worked up about it.

    Default Terrified of birth

I felt the same way, even when labour started I couldnt handle the examinations to see how my cervix was etc. So much so that the doctor and two nurses gave up and just left me. No one checked me from 2cm. However in the birth suite my midwife and her helper nurses were amazing. I ended up asking the midwife to check how dialated I was because I felt like I was sitting on a bowling ball and the midwife giggled and said she didn't need too as they could see the head . I didn't give a rats about the process anymore.

My point is it is very scary in the lead up, but when it's all happening you don't care whose there, what they are doing etc an you are no longer scared , all you can think about is that baby and when they are born its like its only the two of you in the room.

Nothing matters and you realise the worry was for nothing. Enjoy pregnancy, if you worry too much about the birth, you'll do a me and worry your entire pregnancy.

Hi, I haven't felt quite as scared as you, but can I suggest you look up a local calm birth workshop. I did this last pregnancy and among other things, the physiology of birth is explained in a really helpful manner, to help ease fear.
I'm sure other bub Hubbers will have good book suggestions etc as well
    Good luck.

Going to the antenatal classes I found helped ease the nerves.

What are you scared of? The pain? Not being completely in control of your body? Being touched?
Maybe talk to your midwide or doctor? Or a counsellor if you think the fear is way over the top.
I was really scared but after having a really good talk with my midwife i was ok. My fear was the pain but it just keep saying to myself its only a short amount of pain for a lifetime of my little man.
    Good luck!

I was scared when I was pregnant with DS. I disagree on watching the videos.....scared me more. I dont want to see that......ever.
Waiting in the labour room and FOB goes 'whoa look at this! 10cm dilated!!' and held up a piece of cardboard that had a "10cm dilated" hole cut out of it....FOB proceeded to put his hole fist through the hole with an amazed face. I was not impressed and got more scared. I was scared right up until it was time to push.....then, I just wanted to push and nothing else was in my mind....I didnt care who was there or what was happening, as long as I was pushing. It sounds weird, but you'll see.

The baby is in there and it has to come out one way or another. It honestly is the most natural thing in the world. Think of how many are babies born every day, and how many are born in shacks, huts and third world 'hospitals'. Im sure you will be just fine

I'd also recommend watching some natural births on YouTube. Seeing people give birth helps take the mystery out of it and helps you mentally prepare somewhat.
