I made the each of my children an advent calendar last year which were all Christmas trees cut out of felt with contrasting bias sewn around the edge. I then cut out 25 Christmas decoration shapes (baubles, candy canes, stockings etc) in 4 different colours of felt card - one set for each child, and glued velcro on the back. Each day they find the right number to match the date and on Christmas Day they put a big yellow star at the top of the tree. That way they get the excitement of counting down without all the extra presents / sweets that they really don't need! I'll try and post a photo later.
My MIL hates us wasting money on presents so i bought a christmas tree cookie cutter set last year and mafe her a tree. It makes a heap of different sized stars that you stack together and decorate. She loved it so much that i mafe one for the people i work with. I'll be making them again this year too.
