Ahhh no one can give anyone a compliment anymore without it being taken the wrong way.

The victim was known to the killer, had even taken her out and was a family friend.

I think it depends on where you live. No way no how would my daughter at 5 be allowed to play out the front with out me. As to the question as to why we should live in fear of child murderers as VicPark said because they exist. They shouldn't exist but they do. Yes they can break into your house.. people just need to take measures to try and ensure the safety of their children the best way they can.

Not saying in any way at all that letting your child play out the front without supervision is bad at all. I think it all depends on your house, where you live and what your child is like. I'd probably let my 5 year old play out the front if she/he had other children out there with them as well, but on their own probably not.

I would have taken that as a compliment.

I just think your mil heard the story, then thought of her grandchildren and then was just complimenting you in a bit of a weird way.
As for letting my 5 year old play out the front by themselves. No way, no how. The neighbours across the road let their kids play out the front unsupervised from 4 but I am just not comfortable with it...especially when we have had warnings of attempted abductions in the school newsletter and an elderly man exposing himself to an 11 year old at a popular and busy park nearby. We live in suburbia in a 'safe' neighbourhood too.
