Default Thumb sucking - wearing skin away?

I know it sounds horrible, looks nasty too. My son sucks his thumb and the skin on his thumb is all cracked and looks like its peeling.

Any tips on getting him to stop or at least change thumbs to let it heal would be great please!

I sucked my thumb until I was 14

My mum tried everything, but it was just a habit that I couldn't shake. It was my left thumb and nothing else. It was often prune-y, cracked, dry and gross but I didn't seem to care. My thumb is now really flat compared to my right thumb.

You could try pepper, the gross tasting nail polish that you can put on fingers of nail biters... none of that worked for me!

When my dd was around 2yo i used a bandage the ones with the cartoon characters on them. She loved the bandage and it reminded her to not suck her thumb. It worked really well.

dd doesnt suck her thumb but the next 2 finers across from it. She alternates both hands. I have actually seen her while asleep, if one hand falls out of her mouth she will automatically use the other hand!
I just moisturise her hands with sorboline at nappy changes and use dermeeze on them at night. They get red and dry but have never gotten to the cracking peeling stage.
And no, the moisturisers dont seem to detter her from sucking her fingers.
