    My standard recipe doesn't include tomato paste. It generally goes like this:

    Onions and garlic in olive oil. Grated carrot and zucchini (usually 2 each). I'd add mushrooms if DP wasn't a sook who hates them. lol. Then mince. I'd then add peeled and chopped fresh tomatoes or a tin (4-5 fresh, or a 410g tin). Certainly wouldn't use fresh lately due to high prices.

    I'll then add herbs like oregano, basil, etc...

    I'll taste it and might add...

    Red wine
    Balsamic
    Chicken Stock Powder
    Tomato Sauce (only a tiny bit - if it's just not tasting "tomatoey" enough... lol)
