    Default First Trimester Downs screen

So apparently this test is not covered by medicare and will cost us $230! This is my 4th baby and I am positive I never had to pay for this test before...Anyone know when and why they changed it?

I'm not paying for mine its being done at the hospital though so maybe that's why. Not sure why its different for you. Maybe call around different places as you can definitely get it done for free.

I had to pay for my 2. A Gf said its because unless there is a risk factor it's not considered medically nessasary.

My GP said the same .. if you're over 35 its free .. but being under 35 with no risk factors I have to pay $120.

Mine was on Medicare. It depends on where you go I think. I have a feeling that some places just don't put it as the NT Scan so you can get money back / Bulk Billed.

I feel the same steph, I was and still am, sure that I never had this test and scan last time. I needed to pay $250 on Wednesday! I could not believe it. I can claim some back aparently but I don't know how much I get yet. I don't think I am in a risk group so don't see why I needed it however it was so nice to see bub looking like a bub and not a spec

On average, I paid $140, and got $120 back from Medicare. I was not complaining! Steph83, have you checked with Medicare at all?

Ny GP gave me the referral where she ticked the Bulk Billed box - and she referred me to the hospital for this.

AFAIK St George and RPA in Sydney can do that.

Probably try to talk to GP so she can refer you for bb? I understood it's up to them to see if there are any reasons to so that. (I"ve read somewhere that even the high level of anxiety counts as a valid reason...)

(as to me I'm 37 so I think that's why she sent me for bb)
