    Default Carers Allowance Questions

Ok, I applied for carers allowance on 3rd of July this year. After 6 weeks, we were approved for the health care card but not the payment. At the time of applying, we were still waiting for formal diagnosis but had all the reports from specialists saying extremely strong chance of autism. Was just a case of waiting for the appointment. I appealed the decision with new medical report from paed saying that child now had formal diagnosis of classic autism diagnosis (apparently automatic qualifier.) My question is I was told that they can back pay you for up to 13 weeks. Does that start from the date I applied? Or the approval date? Also if the 13 weeks is approved, that would take me back to last financial year. Does that mean I would be eligible for the carers bonus? Trying to work out budgets atm so I can start speech and occupational therapy with my son ASAP. Also how long do they usually take for the appeal? Really hoping its not another 6 weeks.

Hi, my name's Ingrid and I work with the Department of Human Services in a team that responds to questions about Centrelink payments and services on social media sites like this one.

Carer Allowance can be backdated up to 12 weeks depending on your circumstances. If the backdating includes 1 July you are also eligible to receive Carer Supplement of up to $600 and Child Disability Assistance Payment of up to $1000. More than one of these payments may be made depending on how many children and/or adults you receive Carer Allowance for. I'd suggest contacting your local Centrelink office or call us on 132717
to enquire about the progress of your claim and your particular circumstances re backdating.

    There's more on this here:

    I hope that helps.

yes they backpay 12 weeks from the first day you applied. If you first applied before the bonus, you should get that backpaid too.
This is what I was told anyway. Even if they keep declining you, but you keep asking for reviews for the following 12 months, they still need to backpay you til the first day you put in your claim 12 months before.

I'm sure you'll be fine though
